How often should I clean my gutters?

At least once a year, and twice where there are overhanging trees. The right interval is whatever keeps water flowing during a heavy storm.

The purpose is drainage capacity, not appearance. A partly blocked gutter overflows at the fascia, which is where rot and foundation problems begin.

Watch the house during heavy rain. Overflow points tell you where the blockage is more reliably than looking from the ground.

What to check first

  • Downspouts flowing freely, not just troughs cleared
  • Discharge directed well away from the foundation
  • Fascia and soffit for staining or soft spots
  • Gutter slope and secure hangers

When to call a professional

  • The work requires working above single-storey ladder height
  • The roof is steep, wet, or the ladder cannot be set on stable ground
  • You find fascia rot or structural damage behind the gutter
